Asked My Barista in Banff to Model.... He Said YES!

A Spontaneous Passion Project in Banff
While visiting Banff recently, I found myself waking up early each morning to get a little work done before heading out for the day. I became a regular at a local coffee shop, where I noticed a barista who I knew would be incredible in front of the camera.
If you know me, you know I am always scheming my next passion project. Before I could second guess myself, I walked up to the counter and asked, “Do you like having your photo taken? I’m a photographer from Nashville and would love to do a shoot while I’m in town if you’d be interested.”
After his initial shock wore off, he said it sounded fun. He dropped his number off at my table, I sent him a few inspiration photos and outfit ideas, and the next morning at 8 AM, we were out on the streets of Banff creating together.
Meet Nelson, a Banff native and an unsuspecting model disguised as a barista.
Why I Love Passion Projects
I love the spontaneity of photography and watching an idea come to life without any pressure or expectations.
This shoot reminded me of who I was in college, when I would photograph just about anybody who would let me because I loved it so much. As photography has become my profession, it is important to make room for projects that remind me why I started in the first place.
Not every shoot needs a client, a detailed plan, or a specific outcome. Sometimes, you see something that inspires you, ask a question, and see what happens.
A Little Reminder to Say Yes
During our shoot, Nelson shared, “I normally say no to spontaneous things like this, but I’m really glad I said yes this time and put myself out there.”
It was a good reminder for both of us. I got to create something simply because I wanted to, and he got to try something new that he might not have otherwise considered.
I am so glad I approached Nelson at the coffee shop and that we got to create these images together.
